Athletic goods retailer Reebok on Thursday terminated its relationship with rapper Rick Ross, whose song featuring lyrics that seem to boast about drugging and raping a woman has caused an uproar.
“While we do not believe that Rick Ross condones sexual assault, we are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse,” Reebok, a subsidiary of Germany company Adidas, said in a statement.
“At this time, it is in everyone’s best interest for Reebok to end its partnership with Mr. Ross,” it said.
Ross had an endorsement deal with the company and promoted its shoes in print and TV commercials.
Women’s rights organizations and some politicians have been calling for protests and boycotts over the Miami-based rapper’s song “U.O.E.N.O.,” a January release that contains lyrics that seem to refer to drugging and having sex with a woman who is unaware of what is happening.
Some radio stations dropped the record from their playlists, a parents’ watchdog protested and women’s rights advocates have posted video on YouTube objecting to the song.
The song contains the lines: “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it, I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” Molly is slang for the drug MDMA.
Ross denied the lyric in question condones rape, saying the lyrics have been misinterpreted.
Pop the Molly I’m sweatin’!….Dropped!!

MC Hammer was arrested in Northern California on Thursday for allegedly obstructing an officer, CNN reports.
The rapper made the arrest known on Saturday with a series of tweets suggesting that he was a victim of racial profiling.
Hammer (who was born Stanley Kirk Burrell) was reportedly sitting in a car outside a shopping center in Dublin, a city east of Oakland, when he was approached by a police officer. ”Chubby elvis looking dude was tapping on my car window, I rolled down the window and he said ‘Are you on parole or probation?’”
”While I was handing him my ID he reached in my car and tried to pull me out the car but forgot he was on a steady donut diet…. It was comical to me until he pulled out his guns, blew his whistle and yelled for help (MallCop) !!! But make no mistake he’s dangerous …. only thing more dangerous than a scared man with a gun, is a scared man with an agenda, a gun and a badge. I was citied for obstruction smh.”
According to the Dublin Police, Hammer was in a vehicle with expired registration, and he was not the registered owner. “After asking Hammer who the registered owner was he became very argumentative and refused to answer the officer’s questions,” police spokesman Herb Walters told CNN. Hammer was arrested on suspicion of resisting an officer and obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties; he was booked and released on bail from Santa Rita Jail, with a court date set for next month.
Hammer concluded his tweeted account of the incident by describing it as a “teachable moment” and an “eye opener.” “I will now answer his question,” he wrote. “contrary to his personal beliefs, all people of color are not on parole or probation fat boy!!!”
Hammer tell you are “2 Legit 2 quit”!
