Gareth Henry Sets Up a Scholarship in His Name at Heriot-Watt University
One of Heriot-Watt’s most successful graduates is returning to set up a scholarship in his name. Gareth Henry received his degree in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics from the Edinburgh-based university in 2001. He went on to work for some of the biggest investment companies. They have included Fortress Investment Group and Schroder Investment Management Limited. He has taken on several roles with each company, and he has been in charge of sales, investor relations and marketing.
It is often the case that students in mathematics do not necessarily have the client relations skills that are required for high level finance. That has not been a problem for Henry who deals with clients all around the world.
Now Gareth Henry has set up an undergraduate scholarship at his alma mater. The scholarship will not only fund one student’s degree, but it will also directly involve Gareth Henry. Henry will communicate with the student during the year, and he will also offer his advice. At the end of the degree, he will help the student with advice as they make their first entry into the job market.
Gareth Henry has seen first-hand the importance of actuarial math in the business world. Henry sees it playing an important role in Artificial Intelligence and technology in investments.
The degree from Heriot-Watt also has other benefits for graduates. They can often skip various exams that are required for actuarial professionals. Students who graduate and end up with their UK qualification can have that applied to the Society of Actuaries in North America. Graduates from the University have entered various fields including science, business and engineering.
There are two requirements for a student to obtain the scholarship. They must be a citizen of the United Kingdom, and they must show that they need the financial assistance.
