This is a group that is based in San Francisco. It targets the amazon Basin. The group mainly focuses on the advancement of rights of the indigenous people. This has been necessitated by the growth and development of mega projects such as gas pipeline and oil.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRKLA)
This Californian group is in the forefront in the fight for the immigrant families as well as individuals. CHIRKLA came into existence after the 1986 act, immigration Reform and control Act. This act was very monumental in that it made it illegal to hire undocumented workers. This was largely viewed as a way of exploiting and misusing workers in the United States. The coalition for humane immigrants’ rights works towards the actualization of the right for free human movement as well as participation in democracy. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are the co- founders of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. These two have joined hand in the fight for migrant rights in the whole state of Arizona. They do this by funding organizations that fight and advocate for the same.
They were able to amass a lot of money from an arrest by Sheriff. The two reporters resolved to use the $3.75 million that arose from their settlement after they were arrested.
The arrest took place at night in their home after they did a story about sheriff. They disclosed that there was a mega jury proceedings whose main aim was to get the reporters notes after they covered a story about the Sheriff.
The two reporter decided to sue the county driven by the fact that they were fighting towards the implementation of first amendments rights. The two won the case and the court awarded them settlement money that amounted to $3.75 million.
